Amor Polonus or the Love of Poles

AMOR POLONUS or the LOVE of the POLES

Exhibition held in the Orangery open from 24 March to 15 August 2010

The exhibition is dedicated to the history of love as it evolved in Poland throughout the ages. It focuses on three aspects of love; a male-female relationship, family affection and love to one’s homeland. It contains fine exhibits including pieces painted by Jan Matejko and Jacek Malczewski and also a notable sculpture by Antonio Canova.

Amor Polonus represents so much more than quality art exhibited in stunning scenery. Extensive programme accompanying the exhibition supplements aesthetic impressions by using a vivid narrative. It introduces well-known historic figures with their love affaires and romances. It reveals secrets of, and customs practiced in, the former Commonwealth. Amor Polonus assumes shows and drama performances within the exhibition itself, as well as games and competitions for the public, vivid pictures and multimedia. Viewers will be able to actively participate in various artistic initiatives. Invited are miscellaneous groups of audience; children, young people and adults, organized groups, families and individual visitors.

The exhibition will be held in a broader context of different artistic and scientific events culminated in a scientific symposium for the general public entitled ”Language of Love”, scheduled for late May 2010. The Wilanów Museum plans to organize the symposium in the spirit of scientific debates aimed for the general public that have been operating in Wilanów as part of the discussion group called “Praise of Intelligence”. Eminent representatives of science, culture and art will be invited to partake in the sessions.

The exhibition catalogue published in two volumes presents the content of the exhibition. Volume one contains photos of all the exhibits, catalogue notes and essays by Prof. Teresa Grzybkowska and Prof. Zdzisław Żygulski Jnr. Volume two comprises essays of outstanding historians specializing in art, culture, literature, customs and music, including Mieczysław Tomaszewski, Jarosław Krawczyk and Jacek Kowalski.
