Photogrammetry at the Palace

Detailed photogrammetric documentation of the walls, ceilings and decoration of three rooms in the Wilanów Palace – the North Gallery, the South Gallery and the Lapidarium – has been completed. It was made possible by the integration and processing of relevant data collected using modern measuring systems. This was one of the tasks carried out as part of the “Restoration and protection of the symbol of the Polish cultural heritage – the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace in Wilanów” project, co-financed within the framework of measure 8.1 Protection of cultural heritage and development of cultural resources, Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020”.

The digital and metric inventory of the conservation status of the objects supplements existing documentation. Having such data allows for the recording, analysis and tracking of changes occurring in the object, e.g. formation of cracks or displacements. The prepared documentation will be used by professionals and specialists in the fields of preservation, art history, history, architecture, as well as photogrammetry, not only as a metric inventory of a 3D object, but also as a basis for further studies and analyses. The material will be placed in a GIS (geographic information system) and will become a supplement for the already collected and ordered knowledge. The GIS system also supports the management of the space in the royal residence in Wilanów. In the future, selected materials will be available online to everyone, not only specialists, in a special GIS application developed by the museum, which will allow users to gain knowledge about all the museum's resources – from historical to natural (http://gis.muzeum-wilanow.pl/gis/).

The data obtained contains results of ground laser scans (complete with a resolution of 2 mm) and photogrammetric digital photographs. Thanks to the integration of various measurement techniques, the photogrammetric documentation obtained in the project meets the established requirements, such as high accuracy and geometric resolution, as well as the capture of all the details. The point clouds from the scanner and the digital photos have been processed, compiled, analysed and integrated, resulting in the creation of cartometric documentation of the condition of the rooms. It consists of targeted oriented and filtered three-dimensional point clouds, as well as orthoimagery of the colours and intensity of laser reflectivity of all walls and ceilings.
