Renovation and safety works in the Orangery building
Located north of the palace, the Classical building of the Orangery serves an important role in the administrative service of the royal residence, as well as cultural, digitisation and educational operations. The 1749 object, which is part of register of historical monuments, is intended for the organisation of temporary exhibits and cultural events. In the 1950s, it was rebuilt after war damage, while a boiler room and rooms currently used by the Department of Architecture and the Environment were added from the north. The foundations of the western part of the Orangery were reinforced and cellars were added; the foundations of the non-cellared section and the construction walls were also strengthened. The whole object was equipped with electrical, plumbing and central heating installations. The northern outbuilding holds maintenance rooms, the cellar holds a boiler room and a pumping station, as well as social premises of the Garden Department and the 3D Scanning workshop. A storage space is located in the attic. In 2005, the roof covering was renovated, along with a replacement of the thermal insulation. In 2006, sanitary facilities were installed in the cellar and the attic. The foundation and cellar walls of the building, made of solid bricks and cement mortar, are affected by moisture with numerous salt blooms caused by a lack of vertical and horizontal insulation. The building requires: coating insulation on surfaces in contact with the ground, horizontal insulation to block capillary moisture absorption and insulation under the floors, as well as proper sealing of expansion joints, couplings, pipes and cables. The indicated renovation work will secure the historical resources of the palace complex, as well as enable the development of the 3D Workshop. This will allow us to begin work on renovation and adaptation of the Orangery interiors for the needs of a modern exhibition gallery.
