Renovations of the northern section of the roof are ongoing
Contractors have removed the old, very damaged copper sheeting from the roof of the north wing of the Wilanów Palace. The sheeting was installed during the most recent renovation of the building, carried out in the mid-20th century. The disassembly of the large and very heavy skylights installed in the roof, which have not served their original purpose for a long time, has also begun. The skylights were also installed during the post-war renovation and were intended to provide more light for the painting gallery on the upper level of the north wing. Unfortunately, their improper installation, production and parameters quickly meant that the windows became troublesome for the gallery. Leaks, reinforced glass and the very thick metal sheeting used in the construction of the skylights meant that the windows, which froze over in the winter, caused leaks and allowed water to get inside. In the 1970s, the decision was made to completely cover and insulate these elements.
Taking into account the possibilities to light the interior and the exhibits with safe, artificial light, the Museum decided to eliminate the skylight during the planning stage of the current scope of renovation and conservation work. Artificial lighting of the interior will be safer, more effective and more beneficial for the exhibits.
It is worth mentioning that four stone sculptures, each one weighing over 750 kg, as well as four stone vases will soon be restored to their place – the courtyard-facing palace attic. Before the roof repairs began, they were safely transported to another section of the Wilanów Residence, where they are undergoing restoration work.
The end of the conservation repair of the roof of the north wing of the Wilanów Palace, which began in September, is scheduled for November. Work on the task has unfortunately been hindered by the frequent rainfall in recent days. Despite this, work is proceeding according to schedule.
