Further discoveries during the renovation of the upper level of the palace

Relikt wnętrza klatki schodowej Wieży Południowej ,fot.A.Indyk.jpg

During the renovation on the first floor of the palace's garden galleries, relics of the former decoration of the building were discovered.

After removing the secondary plasterwork, a small fragment of the cornice of the former elevation of the southern part of the palace was found in the interiors. The profile was most probably covered up in the 1840s. The value of this detail is important for research reasons because it contains old paint layers dating back to the period before the White Hall was built, which means that they date back to the times of King Jan III and Elżbieta Sieniawska.

In addition, grey layers of polychrome were discovered on a stone lintel in a room at the South Tower. The sandstone, as in many other places in the palace, was plastered and painted a grey, "stone" colour.

A surprising event was the opening of a bricked-up fragment of the former staircase located in the southern tower. The interior, designed on a circular plan, has been preserved in the thickness of the wall between the tower and the gallery floor. It will be available to visitors as part of the palace tour. The relic was preserved without the need for conservatorial intervention.
