‘Art Collecting in the Potocki Family‘

In the years 1799 – 1892, the Potocki family owned Wilanów. Taking care of the former residence of King Jan III and acquiring further souvenirs and works of art for the Wilanów art collection was an expression of their beliefs at the time of the loss of independence. The Wilanów Museum, made available to the public in 1805 by Stanisław Kostka Potocki and his wife Aleksandra, was later systematically expanded by their descendants –Aleksander and August and Aleksandra Potocki (i.e. son, grandson and his wife). They contributed to the expansion of the art collection and the popularisation of the Wilanów residence, where the memory of the history and splendour of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was consistently cultivated. -
