The Sobieskis and Stuarts. Jacobite glass, artist unknown, c. 1750
engraving on glass, c. 1750
private collection
The white rose was an emblem of the Stuarts. Glass with this type of decoration is referred to as Jacobite glass. The white rose in bloom symbolises King James III/VIII, and the rosebud, his eldest son and heir, Prince Charles Edward Stuart.
When toasting the king’s health, Stuart supporters would move their glasses over a glass of water, as a silent gesture of loyalty, not to the Hanoverian king in London, but to the king in exile, across the sea: ‘To the King over the water’.
