François Dumont (1751–1831) is one of the most famous miniature painters in France, active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His portrait of the Duchess of Albany is based on the work of Hugh Douglas Hamilton painted in Florence in the second half of 1785, which, however, does not depict her as a vestal virgin. Hamilton painted his portrait in pastel, as well as in oil on canvas, the latter being displayed in Edinburgh at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. In 1784, Dumont moved to Rome. Not long after, he began to work with the older and better-known Hamilton, and painted his interpretation of Charlotte’s portrait, exhibited  here, at the end of 1788, just before his return to Paris.
