This cross-grain woodcut by Warsaw-based painter and illustrator Franciszek Tegazzo (1829–1879) was used to illustrate an article entitled “Marja Klementyna Sobieska i Marja Leszczyńska” by Józefa Śmigielska-Dobieszewska (1820–1899), a novelist and journalist from Warsaw. It appeared in Kółko Domowe (Home Circle), a magazine intended for families, which also concerned itself with the role of women in the Polish tradition, published and financed largely by the author. In her article, Śmigielska compared the fates of two Polish aristocrats, Clementina Sobieska and Maria Leszczyńska. According to her, both were unhappy in their marriages, but showed particular concern for the poor and disadvantaged. Tegazzo made portraits of the subjects of the article using 18th-century engravings as models.
