We are proud to present an extraordinary publication – Rubensiana in Polish Collections. What is What: Original, Replica, Copy?. This book is the result of an extensive research program conducted at the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów.

Why here? The museum's collection includes 23 artworks that strongly evoke associations with the works of Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640). Notable examples include The Death of Seneca, Diogenes Looking for an Honest Man, The Four Rivers of Paradise and Madonna with Child. The presence of these works in Wilanów’s collection is a testament to the fascination of three generations of the Potocki family – owners of the palace – with Rubens and his artistic circle.

"We are publishing the first volume of a book that highlights Peter Paul Rubens' groundbreaking role in European painting. On one hand, it presents the workshop of this extraordinary artist and his collaborators; on the other, it explores the early reproduction of paintings through engravings and prints used in book publications. The book tells the story of how knowledge about painting was disseminated in the 17th century, in the continuous process of civilization's development, up to the late 20th century," explains Prof. Dorota Folga-Januszewska, the initiator and author of the research, historical, and conservation project, co-developed by collection curators Dominika Walawender-Musz (cultural context) and Dr. Anna Guzowska and Dr. Elżbieta Modzelewska (conservation status).

The volume Rubensiana in Polish Collections. What is What: Original, Replica, Copy? serves as a summary of the initial research phase. It compiles knowledge that may be useful for further analysis.

"The book’s subtitle, What is What: Original, Replica, Copy? is the guiding principle of Wilanów’s research series. It emphasizes the importance of multi-faceted studies of artworks as the foundation for integrated exhibition, educational, and informational programs. Such programs should not only spark public interest and trust but also encourage active participation in the museum’s cultural development, rooted in a mission of public service," explains Paweł Jaskanis, Director of the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów.

The museum is planning two exhibitions showcasing rubensiana from the Potocki collection at Wilanów, as well as pieces borrowed from institutions such as the Print Room of the University of Warsaw and the National Library. More details on exhibition dates will be announced soon.

In the meantime, we encourage you to purchase Rubensiana in Polish Collections. What is What: Original, Replica, Copy? at the museum bookstore or online.

The project has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, supporting research, publishing, exhibitions, and conservation efforts.
