Restoration Works in the North Garden

Restoration work is underway in the North Garden, involving the removal of boxwood shrubs. They will be replaced with turf lawns and seasonal spring and summer flowers. These action aim to restore the historical and aesthetic values of the garden.

The reason for removing the shrubs is their poor health condition and partial dieback. In recent years, the boxwood has been attacked by the box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) and infected by parasitic fungi, including Volutella buxi (Corda) Berkeley var. Pseudonectria buxi (Montagne) Wollenweber, and honey fungus (Armillaria mellea (Vahl) P. Kumm.). This caused severe weakening of the shrubs, as well as leaf and stem dieback. Despite care efforts (systematic inspection of shrubs, spraying, pheromone traps, fertilization, and winter covering), the plants' condition could not be improved, and the aforementioned pests and infections could not be eliminated. In cases of such pathogenic fungal attacks, it is not recommended to replant boxwood in the same place where the infected shrubs were growing. A quarantine period is necessary, as it is the only known and effective method to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens to other parts of the garden.

The restoration work will result in the removal of approximately 560 linear meters of boxwood (Buxus sempervirens L.) and 130 linear meters of dwarf boxwood (Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa'). In their place, turf lawns (bordering the garden beds) and seasonal spring and summer flowers (embroidery inside the beds) will be planted. Removing the shrubs will help restore the garden's historical and aesthetic values.
