The Sobieskis and Stuarts. Portrait of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, George Vertue, 1733

engraved by George Vertue, after Lucas de Heere
copperplate on paper, 1733
private collection

Together with the engraved likeness of Mary, Queen of Scots, this engraving provides an example of 18th century iconography of historical figures. These are portraits of the parents of James III/VIII’s great-grandfather, James VI/I, the first king to rule England, Scotland, and Ireland in a personal union. The engraving by George Vertue (1684–1756) comes from a book entitled ‘The History of England’, a translation of ‘Histoire D’Angleterre’ by Paul de Rapin de Thoyras (1661–1725), which was published in 10 volumes in The Hague between 1724 and 1727. The work was translated into English by Nicholas Tindal (1687–1774), who also expanded it. The English edition contains a magnificent collection of portraits, maps, and plans.
