This engraved representative portrait depicts Clementina Sobieska as queen of Great Britain. The marks of her power are restricted to the crown lying on the table and the ermine cloak covering her shoulders. Set in an oval frame surrounded by a draped curtain, the portrait is placed on a pedestal with a cartouche bearing the coats of arms of the House of Stuart and Clementina’s family. The engraving is based on a drawing which, according to the signature, was made ad vivum—i.e. from life—in Rome between 1719 and 1724. It is the work of Swiss engraver Johann Jakob Frey the Elder (1681–1752), who trained in the Roman studios of Carlo Maratta and Robert van Auden-Aerd after 1703, as well as in the studio of Arnold van Westerhout, specialising in large-scale portraits and engraved copies of paintings.
