The engraving is a fragment of the important triple portrait of King Charles I, painted by van Dyck (1599–1641), the Stuart court painter from 1632. Van Dyck depicted the king in three positions: in right profile, en face, and in left half-profile, the latter of which was reproduced in the engraving on display. Van Dyck’s unusual portrait was sent to the sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini, who used it as a basis for a bust. Completed in 1637, his work earned universal acclaim at the London court.
