Bernard O`Connor, an Irish Catholic who converted to Anglicanism, the personal physician of King Jan III Sobieski, an avid naturalist and an insightful historian, stayed in Poland for several months, but thanks to his intuition, sense of observation and the gift of words he managed to describe it as no other visitor from the British Isles did until Norman Davies. He looked at the Republic of Poland with the cold eye of a physician: he saw all its ills and virtues. He used sources and books with skill almost equal to that of today’s scholars. As a result, one of the best accounts of Poland written by foreigners in the seventeenth century was created.
