Masters and Dilettantes. Encounters with Polish Art of the 19th Century
Author: Wojciech Przybyszewski
‘Masters and Dilettantes. Encounters with Polish art of the 19th Century’ by Wojciech Przybyszewski is a popular scholarly publication intended not only for art historians. 29 richly illustrated chapters are devoted to intriguing monuments, including paintings, engravings and photographs, around which the author's story revolves. From the text we will learn, for example, what ‘schlichtada’ is and what connection it has with one of the first cafés in Warsaw. We will read about portraits of famous Poles, including unusual ones, such as the embroidered portrait of Kościuszko, or the painting of Matejko in the series ‘Alternatives 4’. The ‘Masters and Dilettantes’ of the title are outstanding Polish artists active in the 19th century in the Kingdom of Poland and abroad (such as the painters Artur Grottger, Juliusz Kossak, Wojciech Gerson, Aleksander Lesser, Jan Matejko and the photographer Karol Beyer), but also artists little known today or almost completely forgotten, and yet significant in their time (such as the painters Karol Malankiewicz, Franciszek Ruśkiewicz, Antoni Ziemięcki, the lithographer Jakub Sokołowski, the goldsmith Józef Hakowski and the photographer Eliasz Stumann). The author, editor-in-chief of the magazine ‘Spotkania z Zabytkami’ [eng. ‘Meetings with Monuments’], shares his passion with his readers, doing so with real eloquence.
