Author: Anna Kwiatkowska
The book published in the ’200 years of the Wilanów Museum’ series is devoted to the small but very valuable collection of clocks, some of which decorate the palace facade, and some decorate the Royal Apartments and exhibition rooms. We would like to draw the reader's attention to the order in which the mechanisms decorating the palace were purchased, but also to mention those clocks that played an important role in the history of Wilanów, and today, as a result of inheritance divisions, destruction and war losses, they are outside our collection. Using the example of a small collection of chronometers gathered in the Wilanów Palace, we can see changes in their development from the 16th to the second half of the 19th century. When considering old clocks, the subsequent modernisations of their mechanisms, which are an indicator of technical progress, as well as the changes in artistic forms given to their casing, are equally fascinating. In them, designers, using clear symbols, encoded universal values that should accompany man in every hour of his life: respect for truth, justice, reason, love as a source of life, appreciation for knowledge and the laws of nature. The best artists have ensured that the clocks they designed are considered works of art today.
