Kazimierz Renewed – its monuments and cultural landscape
Authors: Adam Miłobędzki, Krzysztof Chmielewski, Jarosław Krawczyk
What did Kazimierz nad Wisłą [eng. Kaziemierz on the Vistula] mean to the Polish cultural landscape in the past, what is it today and what are its prospects? It must be admitted that although, as Professor Adam Miłobędzki wrote in his essay, Kazimierz aspires to the rank of a 'tourist paradise' today, but these prospects are not entirely optimistic. The city is certainly not in danger of extinction, but does its current commercialisation lead only to positive consequences? Lovers of Kazimierz nad Wisłą and other towns whose genius loci is particularly expressive have many doubts, although they know that there is no point in transforming a 'beautiful town' into a theatre model frozen for life. However, the reflection on the possibilities of preserving monuments and the atmosphere of the place in the conditions of mass tourism remains current. The book we present to the Reader is part of a series devoted to the renovation and conservation of monuments, which also includes: ‘Alois Riegl, Georg Dehio and the Cult of Monuments’, ‘Around the Wawel’ and ‘Monument and History’.
