The resources of the Sobieski Archive in Oława (currently in the National Historical Archives of Belarus in Minsk) are of fundamental importance for research on the history of the Sobieski family and Maria Kazimiera herself. Among the extensive source material preserved in the Minsk archive, the first one was the queen’s correspondence addressed to her sons (letters from units no. 256, 257, 258, 259, 260), from the period after the death of Jan III, when Maria Kazimiera was absorbed in efforts to secure and divide family estate, efforts to obtain the throne of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for Jacob Louis and attempts to establish relations with the new ruler Augustus II. When these attempts failed, Maria Kazimiera decided to leave the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and go to Rome, thanks to which she avoided being relegated to the role of an ‘ordinary’ magnate. The letters make it possible to trace the process of maturing to this decision and the determination in striving to maintain the royal status of the family, maintaining the memory of her husband’s deeds and the glorification of the person of Jan III (...). The volume of Maria Kazimiera’s letters from the Sobieski Archives in Oława opens a new series of publications of the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów entitled Monumenta Sobiesciana. It is a complement to another publishing series of the museum – Ad Villam Novam, as well as the Monumentum Sobiescianum programme implemented by the museum, devoted to the study and dissemination of various aspects of the life and activities of Jan III Sobieski, his legacy and legend. From the foreword by Paweł Jaskanis.
