Product description
Compilation and scholarly editing: Anna Czarniecka
Translation: Robert Zaborowski
The remarks, sometimes biting but often justified, directed at the author of the letters, Maria Kazimiera, are more or less known. However, they concern almost exclusively their form, which seems to result from the queen’s peculiar bilingualism. Therefore, it is not worth reading her letters for the style and language, but for their content. They provide quite a considerable insight into the character’s internal portrait. One can see there the clash of political ambitions with personal aspirations, the care for the most mundane goods and the care for what is timeless, as well as the split between striving for recognition and self-confidence, in other words, the clash of an extroverted trait with an introverted trait. Since the lack of coherence, paradoxes and contradictions constantly recur, it can be assumed that the dynamics of internal conflicts are authentic. The image is probably random due to the fragmentary nature of the material. And yet, despite this, the picture of Maria Kazimiera’s ups and downs, loss and search is exceptionally valuable because it comes from eight years of the final, less known quarter of her life. For the same reasons, it will almost certainly also be of interest to students of the psychology of the (ex-)ruler, widow, mother and woman. – Robert Zaborowski
In the second volume of the Monumenta Sobiesciana series, we publish the queen’s correspondence to her sons from subsequent units of the Sobieski Archive in Oława (NGAB, f. 695, op. 1, no. 271, 272, 277, 278, 286).
