The collections of works of art known as the Wilanów Collection, made available to the public in 1805 by Stanisław Kostka Potocki and his wife Aleksandra née Lubomirska, contain collections of paintings from various historical eras. Created in the difficult post-partition period for Polish culture, the gallery’s task was, on the one hand, to rebuild the memory of the victorious King Jan Sobieski and, on the other hand, to present the history of world art. This dualism was successfully continued by the next owners of Wilanów. The collection currently presented in the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów is one of the few in Poland that survived the tragic fate of the country in the 19th and 20th centuries.
