Charles Burney (1726–1814), a London musician, music teacher, writer and critic, is remembered in the history of musical culture primarily as the author of the monumental ‘A General History of Music’ – the first work of its kind. His ‘Musical Diaries’ – as the notes from his trips to the continent in 1770 and 1772 were called – constitute one of the most valuable and extensive sources of knowledge about the musical culture entering the period of European classicism. The second part of the diary, devoted to the journey through in the areas of today's Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands, in addition to accounts of countless musical events in which the author was able to participate – public and private concerts, opera performances and performances of church music – also includes descriptions of Burney's meetings with Hass, Metastasio, Gluck, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and many other composers, performers and music theorists.
