Product description

Author: Magdalena Górska

The knightly deeds and virtues of Jan III Sobieski were known throughout Europe. After the victory of Vienna in 1683, the King of Poland was praised in many languages and in all corners of Europe, emphasising the military genius of the Eastern monarch, which was beneficial to the Christian world. Foreigners wrote poems in honour of Jan III and praised his knightly talents not only in press reports and numerous leaflets, but also in iconography – especially in graphics. Sobieski's image became as recognisable as the portraits of the Pope, Emperor or King of France. The main characters of this book are graphical theses dedicated to Jan III. The authors of large-format academic engravings combined threads of visual propaganda from the pre- and post-Vienna period with erudite scientific argumentation.
