Product description

Author: Katarzyna Szymańska

Volume 23 of the ‘Museology’ publishing series, presenting interdisciplinary studies in the field of museology, broadly understood as the science of contemporary museums, their philosophy, ethics, mission, methods of operation, practice, tasks and technologies used. The book was published in cooperation with the National Institute of Museums and Collections Conservation. The aim of the work is to examine the connections between the ancient Greek concept of kalokagatia and the broadly understood museum area, as well as to answer the question about the impact of these connections on contemporary sports museology. In order to achieve the assumed goal, Katarzyna Szymańska, PhD had to answer several important questions, starting from how the concept of kalokagatia is interpreted in various modern branches of science, how this concept functioned in the culture of ancient Greece in comparison with other concepts in this area, and especially what has evolved throughout the development of European culture and thought (…). With precision and care, the author has conducted a thorough analysis of sources and phenomena to make the reader aware of the scale and show the processes of penetration of ancient Greek concepts into mediaeval, modern and contemporary European culture. The achievement of the assumed goal is due not only to the above-mentioned appropriate work method, but also to an interdisciplinary approach to the topic, including studies in the fields of history, philosophy, theology, history of law, literary studies, linguistics, theatre studies and medicine. This is the first book in Polish museum literature devoted to the issues of sports museology.
