Product description
Author: Wojciech Tygielski
Giovanni Battista Jacobelli arrived in the Republic of Poland in 1625. He was young, musically talented and quickly found his place at the royal court; first he joined the court band as a singer and instrumentalist and then, after being ordained a priest, he also joined the group of royal preachers. He gained the trust and sympathy of the Polish queens, Cecilia Renata of Habsburg and Louise Maria Gonzaga, subsequent wives of Władysław IV. It was mainly thanks to their long-term efforts that he received an attractive benefice in the form of the Warmian canonship. And it was in Warmia that he spent the last decades of his life. Jacobelli is almost a model example of an Italian emigrant who is looking for career opportunities in a distant country and at the same time constantly considering a possible return to his hometown. Today, we can reconstruct his fate, life strategy, and reactions to the changing realities of the Republic of Poland thanks to letters preserved in the family archive. We publish the main part of this correspondence, unique due to its strictly private nature, in the original version and in Polish translation, including all preserved letters written by Giovanni Battista Jacobelli, singer and court chaplain, canon of Warmia.
