Product description

Eds. Konrad Morawski, Konrad Pyzel

Elżbieta Sieniawska (ca. 1669–1729) led an extremely active life – she travelled widely, wrote thousands of letters, analysed the information she received (correspondence, reports, newspapers), and personally conducted her court cases. It played an important role in political games and managed extensive estates where goods were produced, animals were bred, plants were grown, valuable ores were mined, and crafts were developed. She took care of her numerous residences and beautiful palaces surrounded by gardens, but she also made many foundations for various orders in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Elżbieta Sieniawska’s success was undoubtedly due to her excellent birth, a huge fortune inherited from her ancestors, and the offices held by her husband. However, it was her sharp mind, extraordinary fortitude, excellent management skills, the ability to handle many matters at the same time and a pragmatic approach to reality that were the most important and contributed to achieving success in so many areas. The publication consists of 14 essays, studies on the architecture, design and furnishings of the Wilanów residence in the times of Elżbieta Sieniawska, as well as a catalogue of selected objects related to this extraordinary figure. They present the main character and her achievements in the broad political, economic and cultural context of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
