Managing editor: Anna Ziemlewska
2020 is a year of many anniversaries, but also a year that will go down in the annals of history as the year of the pandemic and lockdown. However, in this difficult year, historical research did not stop and all conservation works remained uninterrupted. Their results were presented in a more modest than usual volume. It opens with an article by Anna Markiewicz, who, based on the correspondence of a Polish resident in The Hague, Antoine Moreau, preserved in the British Library, discusses the mechanisms of ordering works of art to the court of Jan III. Aspects of artistic patronage by Elżbieta Sieniawska, the painting of ‘Saint Roch Visiting the Sick’ and the secrets of the workshop of Martin Altomonte, court artist of King Jan III, are presented by Elżbieta Modzelewska. Anna Czarniecka reveals the background of Maria Kazimiera’s attempts to obtain the throne for Prince Jacob during the Great Northern War, and Anna Leyk publishes a selection of Maria Kazimiera’s correspondence to her daughter-in-law, Jadwiga Elżbieta of Neuburg, preserved in the resources of the National Historical Archives of Belarus in Minsk. As in previous years, in ‘Studia Wilanowskie’ we also publish announcements presenting exhibition projects ("Elżbieta Sieniawska. Queen Without a Crown"), conservation projects (discoveries of paintings on the first floor of the palace) and research projects ("Citri et Aurea") related to the Wilanów residence, its surroundings and owners.
