Product description
Authors: Jan Pluis, Piotr Oczko
The Faience Cabinet in the Wilanów Palace is a room as beautiful as it is mysterious. What was its original purpose? Who ordered faience tiles and when? What do they represent? The authors of the publication are Jan Pluis – a renowned Dutch researcher of faience cladding tiles and Piotr Oczko – Associate Professor at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University, dealing with the culture and art of the Netherlands. Together they have prepared the first such complete study devoted to the Faience Cabinet, in which they seek answers to the questions posed above. Assuming that the tile decoration was created during the times of King Jan III Sobieski, it can be concluded that this is the earliest preserved room in which all walls are decorated with tiles. The presence of so many floral panels, half of which contain unique chinoiserie decorations, is also unique compared to other rooms of this type. A wealth of colourful illustrations, tables comparing products from different manufacturers and archival materials complement the content, making this book a wonderful guide to this extraordinary Cabinet.
